Mahogany Frog at Club Lambi
ProgMontreal and Unicorn Digital are proud to present Mahogany Frog at the Club Lambi (4465 Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Montréal • 514-250-5917) on Thursday, September 9 2010, at 8:30 PM. Admission will be $15 at the door.
Mahogany Frog is an eclectic instrumental progressive/alt-rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The music draws influence from an array of genres: electronica, progressive rock, jazz, late 50's "ultra" lounge, ambient/experimentalism. With the use of a plethora of keyboards (both analogue & digital), feedback-ridden guitars, fuzz-bass and walls of electronic samples, the group creates a tube-saturated, highly overdriven jazz-rock with an enormous amount of energy. Live, the songs all flow together, creating a steady bombardment of highly progressive, exciting music that explores countless moods and ideas.
The group is composed of four highly talented multi-instrumentalists: Jesse Warkentin on guitars and keyboards, Graham Epp on guitars, keyboards and trumpet, Scott Ellenberger on bass and trumpet and Andy Rudolph, on drums/percussion and electronics. Mahogany Frog released their critically acclaimed fifth studio album entitled Do5 in 2008 as their complex and eclectic approach to music reaches new height. Check their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/mahoganyfrog for a few great audio excerpts and full tracks.

Strawbs: Lineup change for 2010 tour
Some big news just in about the electric Strawbs band line-up for both the Canadian dates in October 2010 and the UK dates in November 2010.
Neither Rod Coombes nor Oliver Wakeman are available for these tours - Rod has educational commitments, and Oliver is committed to recording a new Yes album in the States in October/November. But two renowned musicians have stepped in for the Thursday, October 7 2010 show in Montreal as well as the other tour dates:
On drums... we welcome the return of a familiar face to many longtime Strawbs fans - TONY FERNANDEZ, who played on Deadlines and Heartbreak Hill, the latter an album which Cousins considers one of their best. After 34 years in Rick Wakeman's band, Tony was reunited with the Heartbreak Hill and Blue Angel line-ups at the 40th anniversary weekend. His enthusiasm for playing Strawbs material again was both obvious and infectious. It'll be a great pleasure to see him behind the drumkit again. In addition to his work with the Strawbs and Rick Wakeman, Tony played drums with Ruthless Blues, Oliver and Adam Wakeman as well as on Clive Nolan's famed album Hound of the Baskervilles.
On keyboards... we welcome a new face - JOHN YOUNG, who has supported the Strawbs in the past at Bilston. As well as running his own John Young Band, he writes with Jon Anderson, is MD for Bonnie Tyler, has played in Quango alongside John Wetton and Carl Palmer and with Greenslade, Steeleye Span, Bon Jovi, The Scorpions, Asia, Paul Rodgers and Fish amongst other credits. Carl Palmer Band in Montreal!
Following the sold out presentation of Emerson and Lake on April 13th, it is with great honor and pleasure that Get It Promotions and FMPM invite you to celebrate 40 years of Emerson, Lake & Palmer with The Carl Palmer Band, on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the Gesù - Centre de Créativité (1200 Bleury Street, Montreal • 514-861-4036).
Carl Palmer, the rhythmic backbone of progressive rock's first supergroup, has been hailed as one of the world's greatest drummers, thrilling rock fans worldwide with his dazzling speed and technical virtuosity. The Carl Palmer Band features Carl Palmer on drums and percussion, Paul Bielatowicz on guitar and Simon Fitzpatrick on bass. The power trio will serve up an all-instrumental show, entitled "Carl Palmer Celebrates The Music of ELP".
“This is a trio, which ELP also was, but we have replaced the keyboards with some very powerful guitar interpretations of that classic music. Although ELP had a lot of vocal hit songs, we were really about musicianship and conveying the spectrum of emotions through our instruments. Many of the classic elements of these songs remain, but they have been updated and reinterpreted through my band" says Palmer. Among the songs featured in the show are: Tarkus, Fanfare For The Common Man, and Hoedown.
The show will begin at 8:00 PM and doors open at 7:00 PM. Tickets will be available starting August 28 at noon for $45 (plus taxes and service charges) through Admission, or by calling 514-790-1245. Steve Hackett and Renaissance at the PDA
A concert review by Robert Dansereau
Only one word can describe the concert I had the pleasure to see in Montreal on July 9th, 2010 featuring Renaissance and the electric Steve Hackett band... magical!
From the perfect setlist of both bands to the amazing lineup of world-class musicians, that double bill at the Place Des Art in Montreal was one of the greatest "prog" events to hit the city this year!
Renaissance was simply superb, Annie Haslam was in fine shape and her voice was simply heavenly. Annie and Michael Dunford have surrounded themselves with splendid musicians, among others Tom Brislin and Rave Tesar on keys and Dave Keyes on bass, and offered a great set that included many classics and and some material from their brand new EP The Mystic and the Muse. Their setlist: Prologue, Things I Don't Understand, The Mystic and the Muse, Running Hard, Carpet of the Sun, and for the encore, Mother Russia. They played for about an hour and were rewarded with two enthusiastic standing ovations by the sold-out crowd.
Then on to Steve Hackett. Words can hardly describe how amazing this show was, but i'll try. The band stepped onstage at 9:30 and started with an energetic version of Mechanical Bride, immediately followed by Everyday. I just sat there, marvelling at the perfect performance offered by the master. A very high level of energy and an obvious chemistry between the band members, added to the great acoustic of the théâtre Maisonneuve and the impeccable sound offered by their sound engineer, made for a very captivating and especially delightful show. The set included the great Hackett classics like Ace of Wands, The Steppes, Emerald & Ash, Fire on the Moon, Serpentine Song, Spectral Mornings, Sleepers, Still Waters, as well as a few chosen Genesis classics, like a surprising version of Blood on the Rooftops with vocals from Gary O'Toole, an energetic interpretation of Los Endos, and of course, Firth of Fifth in its entirety including the piano intro by Roger King. They concluded the show with a vigorous version of Clocks with a mind-blowing, jaw dropping drum solo by mister O'toole.
The team was well rounded-off by the zany Nick Beggs, wearing his goofy ponytails and PVC (not leather) dress, who was amazing on the stick and the Rickenbacker bass, the very lovely Amanda Lehmann on guitars and vocals, and Rob Townsend on saxes and flutes.
Both bands kindly came out after the show to sign autographs, A phenomenal evening of top-notch progressive rock.
Here are a few pictures taken by Marc Lafontaine and I, of the Hackett show.
